Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about therapy, getting started, or what to expect? We’ve answered some of the questions we hear most often below.
Getting Started
How do I know if therapy is right for me or my family member?
If something feels harder than it used to, whether that’s managing emotions, communicating with a family member, or just getting through the day, therapy can help. You don’t need a crisis to start. Many people come in simply because they want more support, more clarity, or a space to figure things out. At Anchor Wave Therapy, we talk openly about what is working and not working with talk therapy, and we can help you explore alternatives to talk therapy as well.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask about what’s bringing you in, your history, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions and see if the fit feels right. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out. If the session is for an individual under the age of 18, we ask that a parent or legal guardian be present for at least the first portion of the session.
How do I choose the right therapist for my family?
Fit matters more than credentials alone. We can help you figure out who can best serve your needs, and if we cannot provide those services, we can offer referrals as well. To talk about a fit, please schedule a free consultation.
Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes! We offer a free 20 minute phone consultation with the practice owner, Dr. Carolyn Berger. She will talk to you about what you’re looking for and answer any questions you might have.
For Parents
Will I know what happens in my child’s or teen’s sessions?
Confidentiality helps kids and teens feel safe being honest, so most of what’s discussed stays between the client and therapist. That said, your therapist will keep you informed about general progress and will always loop you in if there’s a safety concern. The specifics of that balance will be discussed during the first session so that you will know what to expect.
How involved will I be in my child’s therapy?
It depends on your child’s age and needs. For younger children, parents are often closely involved. For teens, sessions are usually more independent, but parent check-ins and family sessions are often part of the process too. Your therapist will work with you to figure out the right level of involvement.
My teen doesn’t want to go to therapy. What should I do?
This is really common. Try framing therapy as a space that’s theirs, not a punishment or a sign something is wrong with them. Sometimes it helps to let them know they get to have a say in things like session goals or even choosing their therapist. Many teens who are hesitant at first end up feeling differently once they’ve met their therapist a couple of times.
Logistics
Do you accept insurance?
Yes, we currently accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and provide out-of-network paperwork as needed.
How long does therapy usually take?
It varies widely depending on the person and what they’re working through. Some people come for several sessions to work through a specific issue, others stay longer for ongoing support. Your therapist will check in with you regularly about progress and goals.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes, all of our therapists offer telehealth and in-person services.
